Meera

Director of Communications

Meera Niles-Paul currently resides in Portland, Oregon. She completed her undergraduate degree in International Studies at the Soka University of America, a small liberal arts school in California.

For her capstone thesis, she studied the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) methods and their effects, particularly in developing nations. This research inspired her to commit to grassroots, community-driven solutions and education. Her dream is to be an educator and an advocate for food sovereignty, self-determinism, and sustainability.

Meera is committed to global solidarity and human rights. She has had opportunities to connect with various people, cultures, and causes at home and abroad.

In 2015, she led study groups on behalf of the Soka Education Student Research Project (SESRP). In the same year, she participated in a service-learning project that met weekly for four months. The pieces of training prepared her to fly Washington D.C. to research and promote social justice in gentrified areas of D.C., work with disabled veterans, and serve houseless populations. At the beginning of 2016, Meera spent 10 days in Ghana as part of a student-led research-intensive.

After preparing for over a year, the cohort filmed a documentary that focused on the trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonization, and post-colonialism in Ghana. Later that year, she studied for a semester in Granada, Spain. The most influential course she took explored Islamic culture in the country, particularly in the Andalusia region.

Finally, her work with DHS-involved families deeply influenced her commitment to education as a means for collective restoration, good health, and self-determinism, especially amongst vulnerable populations.
